Going back to the basics in career management

Do we have the right career?

Do we make right career decisions? At the right time?

You are probably staring at the questions right now, and saying: God, I haven't thoughts about this before!! Although they are two simple questions, yet difficult (very difficult in some cases) to answer!! Simply because we take our careers for granted!!

Today, business environment changes rapidly, and it is challenging for us to catch up with. Such changes impact us directly, whether personally or professionally . I have been thinking about such dilemma, and i found the best recipe to relief ourselves from such dilemma, is to have clear understanding of the following issues:

• Where do we stand today professionally?
• What do we enjoy doing the most and why?
• What are our current priorities, and how to serve them?
• Analyze our existing skills, abilities and knowledge, continuously, to know if we are up to date, or not!
• What are our future objectives? what are the plans to achieve them?

The answers for such questions, will provide us with roadmap for better career management. For this, and in order to have a dynamic career management mindset, the following issues, such be seriously considered:

1. We should accept responsibility for our own career and its outcomes. When we decide on our career’s direction, we should honor such decision, because it was done by our free well, even if we were influenced by others (family, friends, etc). The fact remains that it is our decision, and blaming others will get us no where.

2. We should evaluate our interests, skills, knowledge, and attitudes continuously. This is a key step, which I call “qualification audit”. Such audit helps us identifying where we should focus our efforts, energy, and thoughts to improve: It identifies what should be done, where and how.

3. Establish SMART career objectives. Once I was reading a book, and i came a cross a proverb, which made reflcet deeply about it, which says: “a wish is a goal without an action plan”. After some thoughts, I found it encapsulating it all: It is easy to say that I want to do, but getting it done, is the hardest part.

4. Utilize development opportunities. Continuously we should seek professional development, to improve our skills, knowledge, abilities, and attitude. Such development will enrich us directly and indirectly, and expose us to latest professional updates, through training, coaching, and mentoring, for example.

5. Follow through realistic career plans. We should not stretch our selves beyond our limits, because achieving objectives should not be a suicide mission! it is ok to revise and re-plan.

6. Networking with professionals. Meeting professionals and networking with them, help us obtaining new ideas and thoughts, which we can utilize in our career.

I hope the above thoughts are useful..

My next blog will be talking about skills audit, and how to do, in a simple yet powerful way.

Until them, regards.
